Transmission Jack Buying Guide – Top Seller Comparison

1000 LB Hydraulic Pedestal Transmission Jack

If you have ever tried to remove a transmission without a transmission jack or a floor jack fitted with a transmission jack adapter then you know how difficult and dangerous it can be. The odd shape of most transmissions make balancing it on the saddle of a traditional floor jack nearly impossible and at an average weight of 150 pounds trying to muscle it out by hand is unwise. To make matters worse, taking the transmission out is the easy part. It’s putting it back in that’s the real challenge. Having the right tool for the job can drastically reduce the frustration and danger associated with transmission removal. Our buying guide below should take the guesswork out of buying the transmission jack that suites your needs.

FACTORS TO CONSIDER BEFORE BUYING A transmission JACK

  • LIFTING CAPACITY – This is not nearly as critical as it is when buying a floor jack to lift a passenger vehicle or truck, but you still need to be sure that the transmission jack you use has enough capacity to lift the types of transmissions that you work on.

  • Stand alone or adapter type  – Transmission jacks come in two different varieties; standalone and adapter. The stand alone jacks have their own hydraulic unit and are design to be primarily used for servicing transmissions. There are two different types of stand alone jack. The first  looks similar to a standard floor jack with the saddle replaced with an adjustable table. These are designed to be used to service transmissions in vehicles on jack stands. The second type of stand alone jack is called a pedestal jack and is designed to service transmissions in vehicle that are on a lift. Adapter type transmission jacks are designed for use with an existing floor jack that has a removable saddle. Keep in mind that when purchasing an adapter type jack you need to already have a hydraulic floor jack and you must verify that the saddle mount hole and the adapter mounting peg are the same size. Another thing to think about if you are considering an adapter type jack is that the jack’s mobility is limited because a traditional floor jack only has caster type wheels in the rear. Most stand alone transmission jacks use caster type wheels for all four wheels making the jack much easier to maneuver.
  • LIFTING RANGE – In general, pedestal type transmission jacks can service transmissions higher above the ground because they are designed to service transmissions in vehicles raised on a lift. They cannot be effectively used for vehicles on the ground or jack stands. In order to service the transmissions in these vehicle you will need to use either a stand alone trolly type transmission jack or a standard floor jack fitted with a transmission jack adapter. If your vehicle has a suspension lift or large diameter tires then you need to make sure that the lifting range of the transmission jack is adequate to reach the underside of your vehicle’s transmission and still have additional lifting range.
  • BASE FRAME FOOTPRINT – This only applies to pedestal type jacks. The footprint of the transmission jack needs to be large enough to provide stability from tipping, but not so large that it interferes with walking or wheeling a stool around the jack.
  • CONSTRUCTION MATERIAL – A transmission jack should be made out of steel. I would not consider using a transmission jack made out of aluminum.
